CHECKING IN

So many things going on I don't have the time or energy to mention, besides anything I have to say I'm sure everyone has heard by now. New issues of ELIMAE, ROBOT MELON, THE LEGENDARY, KILL AUTHOR, and PRICK OF THE SPINDLE.

STORYGLOSSIA is doing a music theme, check out the guidelines for specifics.

DOLLAR STORE SHOW READING TOUR sounds pretty bad ass. The folks from Chicago are taking it on the road. Lots of cool folks reading in lots of cool places, Philly is one of them. I will be there July 13th.

DOGZPLOT will be at the SMALL PRESS BOOK FAIR in PITTSBURGH, July 18-19. If you are in the area stop by. We will also be in RICHMOND, VIRGINIA for their small press fair, but I don't have the dates. And we're trying to hook something up in SAN FRAN, so if you're in the area and want to be part of something, we don't know what yet, contact LAUREN BECKER, our Fiction Editor extraordinaire and Ambassador of West Coast Affairs lbecker@dogzplot.com.

Also, KADZI MUTIZWA wrote an excellent review of THE NATIONAL VIRGINITY PLEDGE here:

http://www.prickofthespindle.com/reviews/3.2/_small20presses/graham/the_national_virginity_pledge.htm

And JAMIE IREDELL's, ATLANTA was reviewed by ERIC WEINSTEIN here. Great review:

http://www.prickofthespindle.com/reviews/3.2/_small20presses/iredell/atlanta.htm

STEPHANIE JOHNSON's new book is out through KEYHOLE.

DZANC started a journal, THE COLLAGIST.

Everybody knows all this, right?

If anyone has anything pending or outstanding with me I will be settled and back to running 100 percent very soon. My shit is scattered across three states in boxes and storage and basements and I'm doing the best I can. Chapbooks and collections coming soon from PAPER HERO and ACHILLES by: SUZANNE BURNS, LYDIA COPELAND, LINDSAY LOHAN, ELIZABETH ELLEN, ANDREA KNEELAND, BRANDI WELLS, BEN TANZER, COREY MESLER, PETER SCHWARTZ, RAVI MANGLA, BARACK OBAMA, NICOLLE ELIZABETH, and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head, so I apologize if it's you.
(I'm lying about one of those names)

Also, read BEASTS OF NO NATION, by UZODINMA IWEALA and NIGHTS OF THE CREAKING BED, by TONI KAN. These shits are cold blooded.

x
There will be three readings, one on each day, in three distinct venues. I'm working out the details with the Atlantic City Art Center to host a reading down in the Marina district. I'm also talking to a few pub owners. And at least one reading I'd like to have outside. Right on the fucking boardwalk, just to see what happens.
x
Fill the rest of your time with gambling, beer, beach, boardwalk, and any other form of mayhem you see fit.
x
I am also working on securing some vendor space for the weekend so anyone who has books or anything else they'd like to sell may do so.
x
Most people I talked to are driving in. I'm not actually sure if Atlantic City has an airport or not, but if you need rides to and from let me know and I'll hook it up.
x
Also, people coming in from out of town, most people are getting rooms at the hotel on Pacific and Tennessee. It's not quite five-star, but its cheap, clean, respectable, and the location is perfect, right across the street from the Taj. I stay there when I'm in town. Last time I was there it was a HoJo, but it might be something different now. If people are planning on staying overnight and want help finding roomies let me know, or just comment at the bootom here and I'll see what I can do.
x
Well that's all I gots for now. If you have any questions please feel free to email bgraham@dogzplot.com
x
And if you have a blog or website, please feel free to repost this info. Keep doing what you're doing and God bless.

KILL AUTHOR

New literary journal, KILL AUTHOR, seeking submissions. Here's their manifesto:

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: A MANIFESTO

Imagination - Writing that burns with a desire to step out of the everyday and into its mirror image, and from there allows the reader to see something different and go someplace else.

Impact - Writing that knows how to leave the reader shocked and reeling, not necessarily just via the events the author is describing - anyone can labor over gruesome violence or explicit sex - but through the extraordinary power of the chosen words.

Individuality - There are too many writers aping the style of other writers, especially online. And far too many authors still want to be Charles Bukowski. We love Bukowski, but his work's been done. He did it all. We want writing where the author dares to explore the outer reaches of their own voice, and see where it takes them.

Invention - We're excited by writing that experiments with form and language. That doesn't just mean we're looking for all-out surrealism, though; we still value work that knows how to tell a story and take the reader from A to C via B. But it should make that journey in some extraordinary ways.

Check these guys out. I think this one's a winner:

THE NATIONAL VIRGINITY PLEDGE. THE SHORT REVIEW. TANIA HERSHMAN. JULIA BOHANNA. MATT BELL

Huge thanks to TANIA HERSHMAN for including THE NATIONAL VIRGINITY PLEDGE on her site THE SHORT REVIEW. The collection was reviewed by JULIA BOHANNA. Here is a small excerpt:

"Mankind, through lust and hunger, is reduced to Freud’s primal id. Ego weakly moderates those basic instincts now and again. Rarely does the super-ego, the intellect, control proceedings. Graham leaves the analysis to the reader."

Thanks again to both Tania and Julia.

Also included in this issue is an author interview you should check out if you're bored, and other book reviews, one of which is MATT BELL's, HOW THE BROKEN LEAD THE BLIND. Reviewed by STEVEN WINGATE. Here's a small excerpt:

"It is all too easy, in the tiny spaces the subgenre provides, to succumb to its temptations: relying on foreboding, summing people up, dismissing them, or ridiculing them for their lack of self-understanding. But Bell, to his credit, refrains almost entirely from easy potshots and maintains respect for the unknown lives of his characters. (The Present, a bit flippant and out of kilter with the rest of the collection, is the lone exception). He creates a sense that his characters are stuck in a murky purgatory and waiting—mostly with a resigned but edgy patience—to see whether the next day holds an opportunity for clarity."
