LOS ANGELES TIMES - HOBART / MATT BELL / SHANE JONES / KELLY SHRIVER

Congrats to Matt Bell, Shane Jones, Kelly Shriver, and HOBART for their mention in the Los Angeles Times. The LAT ran an article on the storySouth Million Writers Award and of the 167 stories selected as long list finalists, they chose to mention only three of them. I imagine this is due to their excellence. Congrats:

Matt Bell
Alex Trebek Never Eats Fried Chicken
Storyglossia

Shane Jones
I Will Unfold You With My Hairy Hands
Hobart

Kelly Shriver
The Ethical Dilemma of a Sandwich Down the Pants
Pindeldyboz

Additionally, I am honored to have had fiction published in all three of these journals:

Hobart 9

MORE STORIES - MONKEYBICYCLE / DIAGRAM

A few more stories from May that are worth reading. I'm gonna give a shout out to Monkeybicycle here even though I am currently banned for life from submitting or contacting their journal. I suppose the ban is all my fault, it has very little to do with one of their editors acting like a dickhead.

NATIONAL SHORT STORY / MASTURBATION MONTH IV

Congrats to DOGZPLOT art editor Peter Schwartz for placing his artwork in the latest edition of NOO Journal. Sorry, I can't do those fancy little dots over the O, they're bad ass.

And since this is NATIONAL SHORT STORY / MASTURBATION MONTH I'll mention Carrie Spell and Kim Chinquee. For their writing of course, I don't do anything nasty to myself when I look at their bio pics.

Here's Carrie Spell's story: It Was Only Two Months.

I also enjoyed these stories from NOO:

No Daughter's Like This One - J.M. Patrick

Smoking Crack With My Mother - Daniel J. Bailey

Universalism - Leigh Stein

Kim Chinquee's story, Happy Birthday To Me, appeared in the debut issue of bearcreekfeed. Check it out.

"I slid down my skirt and Dave pulled up his jeans, and we went to the church lot across the street, where I gave Dave a blowjob. When I was done, he wiped my mouth with his shirttail. Then he told me that he loved me. I thought it was the best night of my life."

NATIONAL SHORT STORY / MASTURBATION MONTH III

Yeah, I know there is more in this anthology than just short stories, but nonetheless, it's an anthology that's worth owning. Here's the note from the publisher:

"
Dzanc Books is excited to announce plans to publish an annual The Best of the Web anthology series starting in 2008. This print anthology will compile the best fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that online literary journals have to offer in an eclectic collection in the manner of other broad-ranging anthologies such as The Pushcart Prize anthology, The O. Henry Prize Stories, and Best American Short Stories."

"The Best of the Web anthology will be the first comprehensive print anthology to represent the vast array of contemporary online literature on an annual basis, bringing the world of web journals to a greater audience. Nathan Leslie, Fiction Editor for The Pedestal Magazine, Editor-in-Chief of The Potomac, and the author of five short story collections, and will serve as the series editor. In addition, each year a guest editor will be selected by Nathan and Dzanc's publishers,
Dan Wickett and Steve Gillis. Nathan has sent emails to editors of every conceivable online literary journal, asking for nominations of what they consider their three best works by September 15, 2007. Nathan and the publishers will also be scouring for exceptional writing on the web. Nathan Leslie will answer additional questions from journal editors at Nathanlesliedzanc@yahoo.com."

"Though publishing online provides us the opportunity to present fiction free from economic imperative, permitting us, our authors, and our readers to relish in the experiment of expression, one of our great regrets is forgoing the sensation of binding it, printing it, holding the work we proudly select in our hands. Then along comes
Dzanc Books, and this gift of a book, Best of the Web, that feels, to us, like the presentation of an award."- Aaron Petrovich and Alex Rose, editors, Hotel St. George
